DEFINITION
Performs a wide variety of custodial and maintenance tasks for assigned buildings and grounds in a clean, sanitary, and safe condition.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Custodian I performs a wide variety of custodial and maintenance tasks at various locations under the supervision of higher-level custodial personnel, a Principal/Administrator or an Operations Coordinator.
A Custodian II performs a wide variety of custodial and maintenance tasks on a night shift at a middle school or day shift at an elementary school, and may provide work direction and training to lower level custodial personnel.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
General supervision is provided by higher-level custodial positions, a Principal/ Administrator or an Operations Coordinator.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Sweeps, mops, waxes, and seals floors.
Vacuums rugs.
Dusts, washes, and polishes furniture and woodwork.
Empties and cleans waste receptacles.
Washes windows and walls.
Cleans restrooms.
Sweeps sidewalks and picks up papers. Cleans drinking fountains.
Polishes metal work.
Fills paper and soap dispensers.
Replaces light bulbs.
Replenishes supplies.
Turns out lights and locks doors and windows.
Oversees assigned areas to prevent vandalism.
Moves, arranges, and sets up furniture and equipment for special events and meetings.
Performs related work as required.
CLASS QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Common custodial cleaning methods and techniques.
Safe work practices.
Common cleaning materials, tools, and equipment.
Schedules and operational requirements of the school facility to which assigned.
Ability to:
Follow schedules and procedures.
Perform the physical activity involved in common custodial cleaning activities.
Operate custodial cleaning equipment. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Be insured at standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance rates and maintain liability.
Carry, monitor calls, and communicate with two-way radios.
Use, read and maintain a digital calendar, district email account, and any other form of digital correspondence requested.
Wear GUSD ID badge and uniform shirts, as provided by the district.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Desirable:
Written and oral proficiency in a second language.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of a valid State of California Class C driver's license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Abilities:
Employees in this classification must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position without hazard to themselves or others. These include but are not limited to:
Sitting, standing, kneeling for extended periods of time.
Walking over rough and uneven surfaces in construction areas.
Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
Driving vehicle between work sites to conduct work, if necessary.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools, and equipment.
Seeing to read a variety of documents.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
Working Environment:
Employees in this classification work both indoors and outside; in varying temperatures; with sharp objects, dust, chemicals, odors, machinery with moving parts, moving vehicles; in direct contact with the students, public, other District staff.

Requirements / Qualifications

The current recruitment process is primarily focused on hiring substitute Custodians (temporary/as-needed basis paid at the first step of the salary range). Permanent opportunities may also become available at a later time and will include salary increases. See 'Examination Process' section below.


Positions are 8 hours per day and 12 months per year. Work shifts are primarily during the hours of 2:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Night differential pay is added to the hourly pay rate.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of a valid State of California Class C driver's license.
Desirable:
Written and oral proficiency in a second language.


Ability to:
-Perform the physical activities involved in common custodial work including lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

A review of the applicants' experience and qualifications will be conducted. Based on that evaluation, applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the District will be invited to participate in the next step of the process. For substitute positions, this will include an interview. For permanent positions, it may include a multiple-choice written test and will include a qualifications appraisal interview. Based on their status, candidates will be notified of the details at the appropriate time.
Note regarding the salary: Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate at the first step only (plus night differential if applicable). Permanent employees receive full benefits; may earn higher rates upon successful completion of the probationary period (step 2 after 130 days of paid service) and may receive merit increases each year up to the maximum amount (step 9).

Comments and Other Information

Prior to employment, a candidate must submit proof of freedom from tuberculosis. Also required after an offer of employment are a pre-employment physical exam (district-paid) and fingerprint clearance with the Department of Justice.
