JOB SUMMARY

The Accountant III/Project Accountant is responsible for supporting complex projects categorized as a large contract value. The Accountant III works closely with project teams to ensure the Work In Progress reports reflect accurate information. They are the main point of contact for upper management on project questions related to cost, profit, billings and cash. They are partners in set up, project delivery, and best practices by recommending optimal project solutions. This position also acts as a corporate resource for Accounting related topics and collaborates with different functional teams to partner, develop, and implement process improvements. The Accountant III understands their projects in detail and ensures that business practice solutions are discussed and executed. The Accountant III reports to the Assistant Controller or above depending on location.

JOB SCOPE & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary Accountabilities

  • Project Accounting
    • Partner with project teams on all cost related activity from set up to job close out.
    • Assist in planning cost management activities for a project
    • Provide project teams and management with job analytic reporting that supports the overall business
    • Work with project teams on initial ERP project set up and budgeting by setting up phase codes
    • Drive the development of the billing cycle and responsibilities of the project team and owner
    • Add best practices to ensure timely billing, approval, and payment
    • Drive the Accounts Receivable collection process internally and externally
    • Review monthly project billings for accuracy and completeness
    • Step into cost management on an as needed basis by reviewing, reconciling, and verifying PCI’s and OCO’s from an Accounting point of view
    • Partner with project teams for monthly forecasting tasks and identify any areas of concerns
    • Suggest solutions to determine proper future forecasting
    • Recommend cost and financial management process improvements
    • Provide training to project teams on billing, PCI’s, forecasting, profitability, accounting principles, and overall business acumen
    • Troubleshoot ERP job cost and system related issues
    • Prepare analytical reporting that will assist in sound decision making for the project and company
    • Delegate work to Accountant’s or PSE’s if necessary and review work for accuracy
    • Approve monthly petty cash reimbursements while validating that the proper process is in practice
    • Train custodian if needed
    • Attend or lead meetings with project teams and owners
  • Corporate Accounting
    • Assist in completing assignments related to the preparation of financial statements. These assignments allow the team to see how recommendations being made can affect the overall business.
    • Analyze revenue, profit, over/under billings all for assigned projects
    • Compile the WIP package for management to review and provide key notes for the project to be presented with the WIP report
    • Work on General Ledger accounts analyses to ensure proper Accounting treatment is being practiced
    • Analysis of balance sheets and income statement accounts
    • Insurance accounts, employee AR, payroll benefit accounts, burden accounts and any other accounts deemed to require expertise while analyzing the information
    • Collaborate on the preparation of financial statements including but not limited to:
      • Backlog report, top level financial entries, GP Fade report, Burn Report and any other committee reporting requests
    • Work with other Accounting team members to share best practice solutions
    • Be a resource for external parties
      • Auditors, consultants, government agencies, project owners, etc.
    • Assist with other miscellaneous corporate related projects on an as needed basis
    • Prepare and report any necessary findings to management

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or related field typical

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of GAAP, IFRS, and other accounting concepts and experience required
  • ERP skills required
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required
  • Problem solver with analytical capabilities
  • Excellent communication and people skills required
  • Proactive in all functions; highly detail-oriented and self-motivated
  • High ethical and professional standards

Work Location

  • This position may require travel to different job locations and to other company locations

Work experience

  • 4-6+ years in the construction industry and general accounting
